We often use the rhyme: Here is the church Here is the steeple Open the door And here are the people As I was coming up Hwy. 27 recently, it struck me as I approached villages in the rolling countryside, that the presence of God's people was proclaimed well beforehand by steeples standing out against the sky. We too have a steeple, a beacon that has weathered one hundred and twenty- two years, two fires, one of which was caused by a direct lightning strike to the steeple. It houses a wonderful bell that calls us to worship, peals out our joy on other occasions and reminds Allandale of God's presence here for everyone. We found over the summer that indeed the structural integrity of our steeple was compromised and that water was leaking into the building proper. Hence my preoccupation with steeples. So we are asking you for money. We need to raise $18,000 above your regular giving through a campaign we have called "Let's Get To The Point". For more information, read on! Fund Raising Campaign for the Steeple
Some of you might have noticed over the summer that during a good rain, water came in through the steeple and worked its way down the walls of the balcony. The repairs included removing some of the flashing and drains from the steeple, replacing it, sealing it, painting it and then removing and replacing any brickwork that needed fixing. This project involved a roofing contractor, a painter, a brick layer and helper and they all needed a cherry picker to get up there. We rented the cherry picker at a very reasonable price and this saved us the $23,000 expense of renting scaffolding, putting it up and taking it down.
So, a group of us sat down and brainstormed ideas on how to raise this money but make it fun and inclusive. We wanted everyone to be able to contribute to some aspect of the repair. So here is what we came up with. We have various levels of contribution. You can choose how you can help. There are some visuals for you to look at in the foyer.
First, the workers need coffee. $2.00 will buy a cup of coffee.
A paint brush. $10.00 will buy a paint brush.
A gallon of paint. $20.00 will buy a gallon of paint.
Labour. $25.00 will buy an hour's labour for the painter.
Mortar. $35.00 will buy a bag of mortar.
$50.00 will buy an hour's labour for the brick layer.
Copper. $100 will buy a sheet of copper.
$300.00 will buy one day of the cherry picker's rental.
$1,000.00 will buy one week's rental for the cherry picker.
You can buy one hour of labour or ten. One hour of the cherry picker or 10. You decide. Even the Sunday School can buy one or more cups of coffee.
There are envelopes on the display table in the foyer and in the pews. Please pick one up, decide your level of support, put the money(cheque/cash) in the envelope along with your name and envelope number (so you can get a tax receipt). Just put your envelope on the collection plate or drop off to the office and it will be recorded.
We are hoping to complete this campaign by Nov. 12th. Our goal is $18,000 but if we get more, any excess will be put towards the deficit. It's a win win. We will mark our progress on the model of the church in the foyer. As we get closer to goal watch us get closer to the point of the steeple. So "Let's Get to the Point".
